First United Announcement

February 7, 2012

Dear friends,

We want to share the news with you that Don Evans, who has been working in fund development and recently made Co-Executive Director at First United, has been granted a one year leave of absence effective March 1st to work as Executive Director at Our Place Society in Victoria.

Our Place Society (www.ourplacesociety.com) is an inner city ministry in Victoria that was created by two downtown United Churches. Our Place Society provides programs and services for the poor, disabled and homeless in Greater Victoria. More recently, they have developed a new community centre with 45 units of transitional housing for those who are pulling their lives back together.

In the past month, Don Evans and Stephen Gray, Co-Executive Directors supported by First United’s extraordinary staff have accomplished a huge amount as they continue to provide support and community within this long-time United Church ministry. I am confident they will build on this during February and the wide range of staff and Board skills at First United will enable us to continue to adapt and strengthen our inner city work. The Personnel Committee will be making recommendations on reconfiguring the staffing in order to accomplish the work Don has been doing.

Having being immersed in the ministry of Our Place Society for one year, Don will return to First United in Vancouver on March 1st, 2013 refreshed, enriched and eager to share his learnings with us. We will be keeping in close touch with Don and we wish him well and hope to partner with Our Place Society in a way that is beneficial for both organizations.

In summary, First United’s mission is “The homeless are still with us and we will continue to be with them.” Through the twists and turns of life this remains our commitment. We trust in the guiding of God’s spirit as we work together in the heart of the city.
