United Church Camping CrestFraser Presbytery has a long history of Christian Camping within its bounds. Camp Kwomais was located in Ocean Park in South Surrey, and Cultus Lake Camp is located at Lindell Beach within the area of the Cultus Lake Provincial campground south of Chilliwack and Sardis. In 2007 Kwomais was sold by BC Conference to finance the Camping Initiative (below).

Cultus Lake Camp's information can be seen at the link in the menu to the right.

Background - British Columbia Conference in 2004 took on the task of reassessing the ministry offered through all ten United Church camps in the province. Derek Evans was hired to set a direction for this process of change for BC Conference camps.

Derek Evans' report can be downloaded (3.3 MB in .pdf format, requires Adobe Acrobat reader) from: CAMPReport. Click here for a smaller summary, again in .pdf format. Click here for the Adobe reader.

Derek is the former Executive Director of the Naramata Centre. Previously he served as deputy Secretary General of Amnesty International where he was extensively involved in institutional assessment and restructuring, human rights investigations and peace negotiations. Derek also served on BC Conference staff from 1979 to 1986.

For over fifty years camps have been an important part of the ministry of the United Church in BC. Generations have heard the call of God at camps and been nurtured in faith. Recently, however, operating camps has become increasingly difficult and expensive, requiring finances, expertise and diligence that have seriously strained camp resources.

The index to the right will assist you in your call in Christian camping!
